Product development

Volvo Aero has been deeply involved in the development of the Vulcain and Vulcain 2 rocket engines for the Ariane 5. We have developed and are now producing the nozzle extensions and the turbines for the oxygen and hydrogen pumps.

The Vinci expander cycle engine is Europe's latest rocket engine to be developed. We are responsible for the turbine development and production for both the LH2 and LOX turbopumps.

We have also developed, manufactured and delivered a full size regeneratively cooled nozzle extension for both the Vulcain 2 engines as well as the PWR RL60 engine, using our own developed laser welded channel wall technology.

We are also exploring the new technology for future upgrades of the European Launcher inside ESA's FLPP program.
