Going commercial - Our history : Volvo Aero

A proud heritage

The history of Volvo Aero reflects the history of aviation with rapid development across a wide-range of exciting fields.

From Sweden's first aero-engine to state-of-the-art technology for the 21st century, Volvo Aero has been there.

Going Commercial

The technical capabilities gained from the development of military aircraft engines were deliberately put into practice in building up expansive commercial aerospace operations.

Svenska Flygmotor received Pratt & Whitney's authorisation as an overhaul centre for the JT8 engines. The overhaul centre grew and in the beginning of the 90's there were more than 80 different customers around the world.

The search for market opportunities in the civil engine programs began in the 70's. A vigorous marketing initiative was launched under the slogan of "Going Commercial". This resulted in cooperation with Garrett and production of components to the TFE1042 engine began.

This cooperation was followed by partnerships with GE and Pratt &Whitney. Today, Volvo Aero is a partner in almost all engines programs and have specialised in shafts, spools and cases.

At the beginning of the 1990's the company changed its name from "Volvo Flygmotor" to Volvo Aero. The Swedish name was difficult to communicate internationally. A number of acquisitions such as the acquirement of stocks in The AGES Group and the purchase of  Norsk Jetmotor also increased the need for a name change. Today all the subsidiaries have included Volvo Aero in their names
